Takeoff day 1
One stop at Black & Brown before heading out to Arlanda.

And then a taxi out. Looking out through the window on the way out, I pretty sure that I won’t miss -6 degrees

Next stop London, luckily I got an upgrade on the flight to London so at least I can enjoy the lounge. Will be arriving in the afternoon in Bangkok. Not decided yet what to do in Bangkok but I’m sure I will find something to do
Day 1 9918 steps at Heathrow
Flight was delayed from Arlanda by 1,5 hours. Since I only had 1 hour and 40 minutes to my connecting flight in London, I tried to convince SAS to rebook me on the Thai flight from Stockholm to Bangkok on Monday. But no, they assumed that my connecting flight would be delayed as well, so they couldn’t help me. Anyway, got on my flight and had a nice “seat neighbors”, two girls going to Costa Rica, with a connecting flight 5 minutes later than me. Once at Heathrow, we all ran like 3-4 kilometers, they made it their flight, but mine was closed! It was only me and Oscar that missed the flight, even though it was like 30 minutes after we arrived before the taxed out from the gate.
Then the fun part started. How to get out of Heathrow? We wandered around for like an hour, asking different people how to get out. We felt like we were part of the movie The Terminal. We went up and down in elevators and finally we made our way to the backside of passport controls. And they could finally help us to get out of the airport. We finally made our way to Hilton Heathrow, but they were fully booked. Mariott seemed to have rooms available, and we decided to take a taxi. But finding the pickup place took us another 20 minutes. And trust me, being dressed for Bangkok is not the best when the temperature is minus 3! But finally, we made it to Marriot and got our rooms. Hooked up in the bar with another Swedish guy that didn’t catch his flight to Tel Aviv. Now some English sandwich in the room, in the middle of the night. My rebooked flight tomorrow is to Munich in the evening, and then from Munich to Bangkok, like 24 hours late. As mentioned in the title, walking, and running at Heathrow ended up being more than 9 thousand steps!
Reading this the day after, I promise I’ll not use the word finally som much in the future:-)
Day 2 Bangkok
So, here I am at last. London to Munich went fine, and I even had a time for a beer at the airport. Then on to a fully booked flight to Bangkok. Managed to get sleep, so it was okay. But as expected, my luggage was not on flight. Very helpful staff at the airport, and they could verify that my rucksack wasn’t on the flight. No other flights from Munich to Bangkok today so it will definitely not arrive before tomorrow afternoon at the earliest. But at that time I will be in Cambodia, and two days later in Vietnam. So we will see what happens. I know for sure that jeans and fleece is not the proper clothing for 33 degrees 😅
Day 2 and 3 Bangkok and Phnom Penh
After arriving at the hotel, I took off to the nearast shopping mall on Sukhomvit road. Found an American Eagle shop with plenty of t-shirts and shorts. And they had a 15 % discount as well, good for the airline who will have to pay. Once at the till, I was asked to download their app, and not via Appstore but instead via Line. Line is an Asian app for payments, chatting, gaming etc, and luckily I already was a member there. Then I had to go outside the shop to a big screen and on the screen spin a wheel of fortune to see if I could get an even better discount, at the same time as other visitors in the mall watched. Luckily, I managed to get an additional 5 % discount. Gamification is big in Asia! Can’t wait to see when NK introduces the same thing:-). Then a quick tapas dinner nearby the hotel.
Didn’t sleep very well, and woke up at 3 am. Took a taxi at 5 am to the airport, had a quick breakfast before boarding the plane to Phnom Penh. At 5 am even in Bangkok there is less traffic….

A quick flight to Phnom Penh and as always a hard time for me at immigration, due to my non existing fingerprints. Outside Ratana was waiting with his Tuk tuk. Ratana is friend of Anders & Eva, and will be my guide and driver here in Phnom Penh. The traffic is pretty much the same as last time I was here, maybe slightly more cars vs mopeds though. After about an hour I could check in at my hotel, situated close to the Mekong river

After check-in at the hotel I went out to buy some more underware. Found a proper shop nearby. Everthing went well, until I asked for a receipt. The answer was “no, can not”. After some convincing they agreed to give me a receipt, and the result you can see below. I do hope SAS accept this

I then took the afternoon off (resting & sleeping) before Ratana and his family came by, and we went out for a traditional Kmer dinner by the Mekong river. Really good and tasteful food, together with a Ankor beer. It’s so nice to have a chance to enjoy local food with people that knows what to order. So a lovely evening with some really nice people. Tomorrow some sightseeing and a boat trip on the Mekong river. If I’m lucky (not much hope though) they might find my ruck sack in England or Germany and have it sent down here. If not, I’ll have to continue to look like a baglady or maybe a bagman when I travel around

Day 4 Phnom Penh
At last, one “normal” day. But first the good news, luggage is found in London and is on it’s way towards Bangkok. I’ve given the address in Vietnam, let’s hope it will show up there. Relaxed morning, so I had a chance to take a walk by the riverside. Met up with Ratana at 13.00 and we first went for a quick lunch, before we took off to a shopping mall where I could buy a small suitcase and get a proper receipt (was before I knew that my luggage was found). Anyway, it makes it easier on my travel to Saigon. We then went to Wat Penh a buddist temple named after Lady Penh, who had the temple built in the 14th century. In the late afternoon we took a boat out on the Tonie Sap River, that joins up with the Mekong river. It was a really nice trip with some great views in the sunset. We had some spring rolls and some beers and just enjoyed the scenic views. Once back on the river side, we had a quick stop at the Night market, but as usual when it comes to me, nothing was bought:-) We finised off the evening with yet some wonderful Cambodian food at a restaurant far away from all the tourists. Tomorrow morning I will take a bus to Saigon. First visit to Vietnam, really looking forward to it.
It has been (apart from the missing luggage) a wonderful and perfect visit to Phnom Penh, and if you plan to come here, let me know and I’ll put you in contact with Ratana, best and friendliest driver and guide you can find here in Phnom Penh.
Day 5 and 6 Saigon
Late in the evening on the day before my departure, I realized that I haven’t received my laundry. So I went down to reception and asked for it. They had no idea where it was, and they couldn’t figure out who had received it. He said he would take action first thing in the morning, so that I would have it before my checkout at 07.00. Big surprise, case not solved in the morning at checkout. The day receptionist however borrowed a moped and went to the laundry, and just two minutes before my pickup she returned with my laundry. They didn’t charge me anything, due to all the problems.
Then I had a bus trip ahead of me, about 6-7 hours to Saigon. I was seated next to a girl from Netherlands, doing some backpacking after her internship in Kuala Lumpor. She was most likely doing her last semester at the university in Jönköping, so I gave her a lesson in some of our strange habits in Sweden, like FikaJ
The bus ride took much longer unfortunately, due to some problems at the border regarding Visa for one of the passengers. I was prepared to take a taxi from the bus stop to my hotel, but for once I had some luck on this trip. My hotel was less than two minutes’ walk from the bus stop. The hotel is okay, not in tip top condition, but it will do. After I’ve checked in, the chase for a ATM started. Took me some time find one that worked. And finally, I could feel like a millionaire, I withdrew 2 million dong!! Approximately 78 EurosJ. In the evening, I took the easy way out and had a burger and chips and a Bia Viet (Vietnamese beer).
Back at the hotel, I started unpacking (the few things I have), and then I found out that my laundry from Phnom Penh was still dirty! How sweet of them not to charge me. So, I had to wash up a t-shirt with shower gel. I also got information that my baggage will arrive Saturday evening to the airport in Saigon, so I probably go there Sunday morning.
Woke up at around 4.30 in the morning and managed to stay alive until 7.40 when I went out for breakfast. It was hard, even impossible to find a breakfast that served anything similar to what we tend to have for breakfast. It ended up with me having a noodle soup with some sort of meat. I did however the mistake to order coffee with milk and received something tasting more like chocolate mixed with cream and a couple of spoons of sugar. Won’t make that mistake tomorrow!
After breakfast I went to Viettourist office and booked a visit to the Cu Chi tunnels this afternoon. And tomorrow a trip on the Mekong river.
The trip to Cu Chi tunnels was okay, maybe a bit too many people in the group. The bus was full, and I ended up with a VERY big guy sitting next to me. I was squeezed in between him and the window.
Back at the hotel, I tried to ask the hotel if they could help me somehow to pick up my baggage, but it was just a firm NO. But then I managed to find out that Lost & Found was open until 23:00, so I grabbed a Grab and could finally pick up my ruck sack. It’s going to be so nice to be able to change clothes tomorrow, and also get some proper shoes.
Personal reflection so far. I must say I prefer the other Asian countries I have visited. Can’t put my finger on it, but somehow you feel more welcome in other countries. You get a slight feeling of how it was back in the days, visiting Eastern Europe. But at the same time, I know that many people love Vietnam and the people here, so I think I just had some bad luck.
Not many pictures taken these days…
Day 7 & 8 Saigon
Well, well. Burritos for breakfast this time. The place looked like they could have some decent breakfast, but no. However, I managed to get a proper coffee this time.
Picked up by the hotel at a quarter to eight. Then a quite unusual or maybe I should say different thing happened. The guide told us that there was a couple that should have been at the travel agency at 7.30 but they didn’t show up. When they called them, they asked for 10 more minutes, and then for another 10 minutes. But now the guide decided to pick them up by their hotel. They got on the bus and then the guide asked them to explain to everyone why they couldn’t be on time, and how it feels to make everyone else wait. Not the way it would have been handled elsewhere. The criticism was fair, but to give them a reminder in public was a bit awkward for everyone on the bus.
After one hour drive, we got to a port by the Mekong, and entered a boat to get us to an island. After a short walk, we would enter a sampan rowing boat, for a trip on a canal on the island. But since there were like a hundred of those boats with tourist going back and forth, it felt more like a visit to an attraction on Disneyland. And then some tasting of honey and different fruits followed by a lunch on another island. Back to the port, on the bus and then a visit to a local pagoda. Since I had my fair share of pagodas before, I stayed on the bus together with some other passengers. As you can read in between the lines, I’m not 100 % sold on the guided trips I have taken here in Saigon. The tunnels and Mekong are the main attractions, or maybe I should say mainstream attractions. I’m pretty sure there are plenty of other things to see here, but if you do a search 95 % of all suggestions on what to do here involves the tunnels and Mekong. Nothing planned for tomorrow, and on Tuesday I’ll have to do some work.
Day 8
Strange breakfast this morning. Found a sports bar that could offer an omelet. They had a big screen showing some American football and in the bar four Americans sat and drank beer and smoked and screamed. At least one of them wore a red cap and I’m pretty sure it had the text MAGA in the front. And mind you, this is seven o’clock in the morning! Suddenly a guy on a moped showed up with a plate, and yes it was my omelet that was delivered. So even the restaurants use takeaway with deliveryJ
Some time after breakfast I took a walk to Ben Thanh market, one of the biggest indoor markets in Saigon. But when you are in the process of having to throw clothes and stuff away, since you don’t have room for it in you luggage, adding more stuff is not on the agenda. But to be honest, those of you that knows me, also knows that I’m a terrible shopper, and I hate markets and car boot sales.
The afternoon I spent claiming money from SAS and my insurance company for the delay and the delay of baggage. I also took the decision to rebook my flight from Saigon to Manila, so I leave Tuesday morning instead of Wednesday morning. I also took some time to schedule when I’m going to meet all my friends in Manila, and it turns out that I’m going to be quite busy for four days.
Next posting here will be from Manila
Day 9 Manila
I made the receptionist in Saigon very happy when he got a brand-new suitcase from me, the one I had to buy waiting for my luggage. I went to the airport quite early so I could have a breakfast there. Since I booked my trip via a travel agency, I couldn’t check in online, so I had to stand in long line waiting for the check in. When I finally reached the counter, the girl asked me about my returning flight from the Philippines. I didn’t book anything, since I don’t know where I’ll be when it’s time to go home. But I wasn’t allowed to check in without a returning ticket. So I had to step out of the line and try to book a ticket on my phone. No working Wi-Fi so for the first time I had to use roaming. But I succeeded in buying a return ticket from Manila to Bangkok and I could proceed with the check in. And then a very long waiting time to go through immigration and security, and I made it to the gate just before it was closing.
Flight went well, and at Manila airport you had to show a QR code created in some sort of app that I haven’t downloaded. And again, no internet, and from the short usage in Saigon I already received warnings that I would soon run out of roaming data. But the staff was very helpful and a girl took her telephone and put in all the information and took a photo with my phone of the QR code.
Then for the first time for me anyway, I came to pick up my baggage and the belt had already stopped. But luckily, someone had lifted off my ruck sackJ. Then a Grab to the hotel in time to join a Teams call.
At 19:00 I met up with Monica and later on Niels joined us. Monica and I have worked together in the past and we have stayed in contact over the years. Monica’s boyfriend Niels (yes, Dutch) also used to work for CGI but are now CEO for a network company in Manila.
We had a superb dinner at Dr. Wine Manila. Great restaurant where I enjoyed an excellent steak tartare together with a really nice Merlot wine. After dinner we did some bar hopping and started off at the Spirit Library with some great drinks. A very special place with shelves going all the way up to the ceiling, but instead of books, there are bottles of all kinds. And they made some really good and unusual drinks. Recommendable!! Then a roof top bar, a club and finally a pub somewhere in Makati and I made my way back to the hotel at 01:30
Day 10 & 11 Manila
No hurry today, nothing before 14:00 when meeting up Marvi at the office in One World Square. After the meeting with Marvi I had the chance to meet the team in Manila working for Sweden and Norway. It was so nice to meet them all and to try to give them some words of wisdom on how to deal with Swedes and Norwegians! We then went out for dinner, me, Fern and Marvi and we ended the evening at the White Banana Club, where Monica was DJ:ing.
Next day was not one the best days. After breakfast I started to feel ill, and it soon turned out that I had stomach flu. So instead of meeting up with Norman I had to stay in bed all day. But in the evening, I was able to eat some food and slowly get back in shape
Saturday morning, I went to meet up with Fern and Marvi at the office. We then took off towards the Taal volcano. Taal volcano is an active volcano (last erupted in 2020). We went to a hotel with a stunning view overlooking the volcano and the surrounding lake. We also enjoyed a lunch there, and some performances of native dances from the northern part of the Philippines. After lunch, they took me to Johannes and Stella. Johannes and I are colleagues from CGI, but both working part time. They have a lovely house in a gated community south of Manila. I felt really welcomed and we had a calm evening together at their home. Then early to bed since it’s an early start tomorrow with my flight leaving at 9:30.
Day 12 & 13 Bohol
Alarm went off at 05:30 and at 06:30 we were on the way. Relatively little traffic so we made it to the airport in less than one hour. Both Stella and Johannes joined me, so we took farewell at the airport.
In the departure hall I started looking for my check in counter, but I couldn’t find any information about my flight. I checked my ticket again and then saw some two letters following the time 09:30. The two letters read “pm”. I can’t believe I made that amateur mistake. So, like 14 hours before my flight!! I went to the service desk for Cebu Pacific and for once I was lucky. The had one seat left on the flight leaving at 01:15 pm (or as I would put it, 13:15). The resort was contacted, and the pickup time was also changed! I managed to kill the waiting time and got on my flight and arrived safely to Bohol.
The driver was waiting for me, and we got on our way. It’s a two-hour drive, but what I didn’t know was that I had been appointed to the Philippines next F1 driver. Even more skillful, because he picked up his phone from time to time. And every time we survived some crazy overtaking of another racing car, he touched his cross hanging from the mirror and did a sign of cross. Vaya con dios!! But somehow, we survived and got to the resort!
It’s a small resort just by the sea, seven bungalows and a small restaurant. Everything is clean and the staff is very helpful, so I’m enjoying my time here. And that means reading books and just relaxing! Weather is sort of on and off, sometimes sunny and sometimes raining. Tomorrow (Wednesday) I’ll go to the Chocolate Hills, let’s hope it’s not the same driver! Also worth mentioning is that I have found some really good, tasty and spicy Pilipino dishes.

Day 14 Bohol
Time to go to Chocolate Hills! About one hour drive to this well-known tourist attraction in Bohol. There are approximately 1.700 hills scattered around this area. If you’d like to understand how they were created, please googleJ! The explanation is far to long and complex to write about here. Later in the season they will turn brown instead of green, hence the name Chocolate.
After the visit to the viewing point at Chocolate Hills we drove to a place where you can see Ghost Tarsier (correct name Tarsius tarsier) that inhabits these parts of the Philippines. It’s the smallest primate on the earth, length between 8e0 and 160 mm and weigh between 80 and 165 grams. So, it’s a very small little animal. Unfortunately, as you can judge by their eyes, the are active during nighttime, so most of them were asleep. But I managed to get some pictures, but from a very far distance.
A bit of work and meetings in the late afternoon and evening, but that’s okay. Currently it’s pouring down and very windy, so it’s really nice to sit inside. Tomorrow I’ll take a ferry to Siquijor, and there I’m going to stay for five days. I will most likely rent a scooter and explore this small island on my own.
Random pictures from Bohol
Day 15-17 Siquijor
After a final morning swim in the sea, I took a taxi and went to the harbor and got on my ferry to Siquijor. The sea was quite rough and that’s something I enjoy (yes, I know, a bit strange). Once on Siquijor I took a tricycle to my guesthouse. I was really surprised, the road across the island was in a really good shape plus the middle of the road was lit up with lights. It looked more like a landing strip on an airfield than a road. The guesthouse is really nice, and for the first three days I have a family room. They only serve breakfast, so I had to take a walk towards the village to get something to eat. Unfortunately, the power went out, but most places have a diesel engine to produce back up power. But sitting in a restaurant with a large diesel running was a bit noisy.
Next day I rented a scooter from the guesthouse. First stop was to go to a laundry and next stop was to buy some food. After lunch I took off to a nearby beach that was almost empty. But when I went into the water, it was really muddy. Talked to two German girls at the beach and they recommended another beach nearby. And it was much better. More people there, but still not crowded. It’s recommended to know when it’s flood and tide here, because when it’s tide the water becomes almost “unswimmable”. Late in the afternoon I had some meetings, and then I got on my way to have dinner. This time I chose a “outdoor” restaurant with some great and very affordable food.
Saturday morning, early bird in order to get to the Cambugahay Falls before everyone else. It was a 50 minutes’ drive with my scooter (goes as fast as 90 km/h!!). Once there, I bumped into the German girls again. They are doing a two-month travel around the Philippines. It was a nice area with waterfalls, not the highest or most spectacular waterfalls I’ve seen, but it’s definitely worth a visit.

Day 17 to 18 Siquijor
In the afternoon, I went back to Paliton beach and ended the day at the “outdoor” restaurant again.
With some suggestions from the owner of the guesthouse, I took off towards Lugnason’s Falls. It was much closer and after a walk through the jungle, I came to the falls. And I was completely alone! It was not as big as the Cumbugahay Falls, but it was definitely worth the trip.
At lunchtime, I took off towards BuCafe, situated high up in the mountains. It was a really lovely place, very calm and very few guests. I ordered a Mango shake and Calamares (yes, I know, strange combination) and it was really good. The shake was the best shake I’ve had ever. I spent some time there, just admiring the view. What I didn’t see was that they had a pillow in the form of a phallus. But once I posted that picture on Instragram, others made me awareJ
Later in the afternoon (when flood was at it’s peak) I went to Tubod beach to do some snorkeling. They said that there were turtles in the water, but unfortunately, I didn’t see any. And not many fishes either.
I had dinner at a very local barbecue restaurant, and I got crazy and went for the pig stomach! And it was good, pretty similar to thick bacon.
Tomorrow, I’ll book the rest of my stay here in the Philippines
Day 19 & 20 Palawan
My final day in Siquijor! My plan was to go to the beach, but it was cloudy and some rain, so I had a calm day at the guesthouse, with some work meetings in the late afternoon. Dinner at the same place as the evening before, but this time chicken. I also need to make a correction. I realized the second evening at the restaurant, that they offered Pork belly. The first night I made a quick translation to Swedish and since belly and stomach has the same name in Swedish, I made the mistake to believe that I had stomach for dinner, when in fact it was belly. But the important thing is that I thought it was stomach and still ordered it!
Breakfast at 06:50 and then off to the harbor. The ferry went first to Bohol and then continued to Cebu. Once in Cebu I got a taxi to the airport. A very nice and modern terminal (domestic) with plenty of shops and restaurants. The flight was slightly less than one hour and for once my back pack was one of the first baggage on the belt! Outside my driver was waiting and then we had a 1,5 hour drive to the Jungle Resort. It turned out to be a very lovely place and they had a Valentine table ready for me. I went for the full Valentine menu, which was a huge mistake. It was far too much food. After dinner I was showed to my house (Mahogany). A huge house with four beds and a very nice interior. Also, with a huge porch. All the houses/bungalows are spread out so you’re vey far from the nearest neighbor.
The next day I went for the Underground river trip. It was only a 15 minutes drive from my resort. This time it was a smaller group, only like 8 people. As expected, it was very touristic, but still the scenery and the underground river was fascinating, well worth a visit. After the river tour, there was a lunch buffe, with really good food. Back to the resort at 14ish and then I took it easy for the rest of the day, and spent some hours working as well. One thing I noticed here, is that everything closes very early. So when I had finished my last meeting at 22, the whole place had closed down. So it was an early night once more.

Day 21 to 24 St Vincente
Early start, joined a local bus going from the resort to a junction some 30 minutes away, After some 30 minutes I was picked up by another van going towards Port Barton. Once in Port Barton I went down to the beach and had a second breakfast at a guesthouse by the beach. Didn’t see much of Port Barton, but what I saw I liked. And others that I’ve met have also liked it. At around 13ish I was picked up and taken to the resort by boat The beach looked nice and the resort looked okay, a little worn down, but okay. Immediately at arrival the first thing they asked for was payment for the boattrip. And then I had to sign a paper where I was financially responsible for an umbrella and a torch! I also got informed that electricity only was available from 18:00 to 05:00. I was starting to feel a bit untrusted and wasn’t very happy with my choice of resort. Port Barton seemed much nicer. I had dinner down by the beach and also found out that they didn’t put anything on the room. Anything that I ate or drank had to be paid immediately. That didn’t help my view of the place.
In the morning the day after, the beach showed its true face. It was rocks and corals going all the way up. When I arrived it was flood, so it didn’t show. So the beach was impossible to use. I tried to find an accommodation in Port Barton, but didn’t get any replies. So I spent two days at the resort, most of the time reading books, and staying out of the sun since you couldn’t cool off in the sea. I had my dinners at another place by the beach, with better and cheaper food and beverages. On my second day, a French couple arrived, and they immediately started looking for other places to stay. They were even more disappointed than I was.
The last day, and I had a boat booked at 08.30 taking be back to Port Barton. After a quick coffee at a guesthouse I went to the bus terminal and got on my bus that took me to Puerto Princesa in about 3 hours. Here I’ve booked a very cheap hotel, but I’m positively surprised. It’s nice, clean and has a really nice swimming pool. Not that I will have time to use it, but still. Tomorrow I have a flight to Manila.
Day 24-26 Palawan, Manila and Bangkok
I had my dinner at Badjao Seafront Restaurant, a recommendation from Shynne. And it was really lovely! Amazing view, very good service and great food. And yet the same prices as any other restaurant.
Last day in Palawan, and I got to a really good start. Took a swim in the pool, before I had my breakfast. I had to leave at 8:15 to go to the airport. I checked the prices for transportation, and a tricycle was 150 pesos and large van with aircon was 250 pesos. And I hesitated a while before I realized how stupid that was. It’s a difference of less than 2 Euro! So I took the van!
Flight to Manila went well, and once we landed I started checking out the address to the hotel. Then I suddenly saw that I had booked the wrong dates for my hotel. Instead of checkin on the 20th, I’ve booked the 21st! Anyway, I got to the hotel, and after some discussions and waiting, the changed my reservation without any cost. In the evening I met up with Shynne at Greenbelt for dinner. It was really nice to see Shynne again, and we had as always a great time together.
My final day in Manila (flight leaving at 17:00)! I met up with Monica for lunch, and it turned out that she and Niels lived only 5 minutes walk from my hotel. We went to the Filling Station in Makati, a crazy place but at the same time really cool. Open 24/7! Then we walked around in the neighborhood for a while before it was time for me to go to the airport.
At the airport, I set a new personal record! In 10 minutes I had checked in, passed through Immigration and Security! Let’s hope this trend will continue. I don’t need to set a new record every time…
Once in Bangkok I took a Grab to my hotel. It was a rather long drive (45 minutes) for a hotel with Airport in the name. Once at the hotel, it became obvious to me that it was another airport that the hotel was close to! But let’s hope this is the last amateur mistake during this trip. So far I’ve:
-
- booked a flight at 9:30 pm and gone to the airport in the morning
-
- booked the wrong date for a hotel
-
- assumed that a hotel with the name Airport is close to the airport of my choice:-)
So, now it’s my last day in Asia. I had a lunch meeting at a superb Thai restaurant in the city, before I went back to my hotel. Luckily, being a Diamond Select customer, I had a late checkout (16:00). Now I’m sitting in the foyer trying to kill time, before I go to the airport. I’m flying at midnight from Bangkok to Calcutta, have like 7 hours stopover there before I fly to Dehli. Two hours waiting time in Dehli before the 9 hours flight from Dehli to Frankfurt, and after that, Frankfurt to Stockholm. Expect to be home close to midnight on the 23rd. And honestly, I don’t expect to see my baggage on the belt in Stockholm:-)
Day 26 & 27 Bangkok & Stockholm
Well, well! I’m lucky that the worst episode of my trip would occur on my last day!
Took a taxi to the airport, traffic was okey and a got to the airport like 5 hours before my flight. Once again, no waiting time for check in, lucky me:-)! However, it took some time at the check in. The guy didn’t seemed that experienced and had to ask a colleague to help out. After some discussions they told me that I needed a visa in order to fly to Calcutta, since I was flying domestic from Calcutta to Delhi. That came as a total surprise to me, not mentioned anywhere in the information I received from SAS. And I would imagine a visa to India would at least take a couple of days to get approved…. So the only option left was to find another flight. I went to the ticket office, and they had one ticket left on the flight from Bangkok to Stockholm, leaving in 5 hours. I asked them to hold that ticket for some 15 minutes. I called Customer Service in SAS and asked them to check if I could change my flight. But it turned out that once you have started a bonus trip (in my case, leaving Stockholm), you can’t make any changes. I of course discussed the lack of information from SAS that a ticket with only transfer could potentially mean that I would need to apply for a visa. She agreed that it was impossible to know, but still the traveller’s responsibility. After screaming out some fck, fck (that she totally understood) I had to return to the ticket office and pay my ticket. One way Bangkok to Stockholm for the small amount of 1 400 Euros!!
After some food and quite close to departure time, I found this information on internet: A transit visa is not required by a foreigner passing through, in direct transit by air, and travelling onward through India, provided he/she does not leave the specified precincts of the airport.
So it turned out that the check in counter was wrong about visa. Not even a transit visa was necessary! Rest assure that I will try to get my money back, a process that will start immediately. Anyway, the trip back home went well, however lessons learned was that I will never again fly between Stockholm and Bangkok on a direct flight. It’s crowded with families with small children that constantly cries! And the flying time is a bit too long. It’s much better to take two relatively shorter flights with a transit since that is also not the preferred choice for families with small children.
Came back to a white and cold Stockholm, but I guess I just have to adjust and accept that! Thanks for following me on my trip, see you soon again I hope!
