Norway trip 2018 – summary
So, now the trip is over. We covered 3 000 kilometers during our 11 day trip. We started off and ended in Stockholm:
We have been extremely fortunate with the weather, only one day with rain. Most of the days we have had temperture between 25 and 32 degrees. Hottest day we were up to 35. Highest altitude was 1 200 meters. We camped all nights but two (Telemarken and Oslo). Oslo was planned, but Telemarken was necessary due to the heavy rain. We had two incidents with the bikes, one with Feridun’s bike and one with the Virago that Dale was driving. Both related to battery and charging, but both problems were fixed “on the road”. We have all loved Norway and the beautiful scenery, the fjords, the lakes, the roads and the friendly people of Norway. Only downside if of course that it’s so expensive. But camping does make the trip more affordable, and fuel prices aren’t that much higher than back home. Dale has become a true biker now, with some milage behind him. It took only a few days before he had ridden more than he has done in his previous bikers life. I guess it’s a good sign when we at the end started discussing the next trip. Should it be Iceland or Scotland? Let’s see what happens. There will be a movie coming out, but that will take a couple of days.
Day 11 Back in Stockholm
Safely arrived in Stockholm this afternoon. More to come later
Day 10 By a lake close to Ludvika
We went on a small touristic tour in Oslo in the morning. We went to the Royal Castle and The Fortress and finally a quick tour on Karl Johan. We went back to Helsfyr and picked up the bikes and headed towards Sweden. Some of the roads were nice but we have been spoiled with magnificent roads and views, so we weren’t that impressed! We went to Hagfors, were we bought food and beer and then started looking for a nice camping spot. After a while we found a good place, a small lake with a sand beach. I managed to fall with the bike in the soft sand on the way down. Jordan then drive and had the same experience. The bike is heavy and that makes it hard in soft sand.
Day 9 Oslo
Did we enjoy a night in a proper bed, with a proper pillow? Oh yes we did. We had a lovely breakfast (not the standard, bread, peanut butter and jam). Most of our stuff had dried during the night, but we put out the tent in the morning to make it dry in the sun. We got off at 11, and today it was a nice day, temperature around 20 degrees and sunny. Our aim was Oslo, and the GPS took us on some really nice roads. No photo stops today, I guess we have taken all the lake/creek/fjord pictures we need. We arrived safely to the hotel (located on Karl Johan street), put our luggage in the room and took the bikes out to the CGI office and put them in the garage. A quick subway ride back to the hotel and then off to The Dubliners pub for a dinner, a couple of pints and a game of dart. The we walked out to Akers brygge and ended up at a place called Bryggan. We actually got everyone to leave their smart phones in a pile on the table. Picking them up would mean that you had to pay for the next round. Really nice actually to get the phones out of the way. Btw, nobody picked their phone up:-). Tomorrow we will have an early breakfast, a quick tour around in town before we aim to drive towards Dalarna, and our last night camping. Sorry, no pictures today
Day 8 Vågslivatnet
Well, an unusual day! The guys returned from the hike and went to sleep at 6 am. The rest of us got up at between 8 and 10. We took a walk downtown and found a nice bar/restaurant where we sat down and tried to kill the day. Later in the afternoon we got a call from Base camp that the tent was flooded! We went back, packed all our wet gear and hit the road. Forecast said heavy rain and it was correct! After some 80 kilometres we found a nice hotel up in the Highlands. We checked in, got some help with drying and even washing some clothes. We had a nice dinner and now we relax in the bar. Tomorrow we head for Oslo!
Day 7 Trolltunga
For once we got started pretty early, 9.30ish. It soon got really warm again, and it was really nice with a tunnel now and then. Today we drove in the longest tunnel so far, 25 km. We had yet to take another ferry today and we had some really nice driving during the day. When we reached Hardangervidda it started to get colder and there was some rain (or maybe us driving into the clouds). At 1.200 meters we took a short coffee break and warmed ourselves. But the scenery was fantastic, and for once, not too many cars. On our decent, we experienced some really amazing tunnels, that almost went 360 degrees. We then past by some skiresorts, among them Geilo. We came to Trolltunga at 22ish and took the narrow road all the way up to the starting point. However, camping was not allowed anywhere up there, so we had to drive to Odda camping. Weather forecast says thunderstorms and heavy rain tomorrow and Trolltunga will be closed, so the english part of the group decided to go up to Trolltunga in the middle of the night. It’s a six hours walk up and 5 hours down. So we expect them back around noon tomorrow. If the weather forecast is right, we will probably stay here tomorrow. Unfortunately our tent is big and comfortable, but we are not sure it will cope with rain and storm. But we will find out!
Quick update, they didn’t make it! They had a hard time finding the right track, and got lost for a period of time. When it started raining, they decided to head back to Base Camp. Now they are asleep in the tent, safe and sound!
Day 7 right now…
Hardangervidda!
Day 6 Lovatnet
We left in the afternoon and took the ferry towards Geiranger! A quick drive and the we ended up at a viewpoint with a magnificent view of Geiranger fjord! Haven’t been able to synchronise those pictures yet, sorry! We then headed towards the lake Lovatnet. But the traffic leaving Geiranger was by far the worst on this trip. We came up on 1 100 meters with a beautiful landscape. And when we got to Lovatnet we had a fantastic drive on a narrow road, all the way to a glacier. We then decided to stay by the lake and we took the luxury of using a camping.
Day 6 ?
I have some tired guys here (10:25), but since the rain is dripping down at the moment, we have no rush. We will leave in the afternoon, head for Geiranger and then maybe Lovatnet. After that I guess we want to drive towards Trolltunga.
Yesterday evening we discussed best and worst moments so far and actually the road from Trollstigen to Ålesund was very popular! So far the worst moment was when we had problems with Feridun’s bike.
Day 5 Trollstigen
After a proper English breakfast (thanks Dale) we left at 12. We had a fairly short trip to Trollstigen and no incidents on the way. It was really warm, and at one point the temperature went up to 34,5 C. We started our climb up the mountain and finally made it to the top! The view was fantastic and we used up a lot of memory on our cameras. Then we aimed for Geiranger via Ålesund. But when it turned out to be a beautiful city and there was a free camping downtown we decided to stay for the night. We had a quick bath in the crystal clear river and went and had dinner at a pub. How the evening will end is not clear apart from the author who is already in bed. Weather forecast is rain starting tonight but will end just after lunch tomorrow.
Day 4 second part
So here are finally some picture from the adventure of the day! We went to the ”road” and the young boys took a swim. After the trip we went back to the camping and had a pasta carbonara. Then we went back to the road and had a long photo session. Now we are enjoying the camping with some whisky and beer, and planning for tomorrow
Day 4 – still the same place
So, first report from my computer and not my phone.
Yes, we ran into problems yesterday. Andreas old Yamaha Virago did stop, and the battery was dead. So with some help from the Norwegian CGI office, we could find out that the battery we needed was not available anywhere nearby. We contacted motorcycle shops etc, but they could only order the battery. So we went to Molde and Biltema, where we found a battery that had almost the same size and strength. What we didn’t realize was that the connections on the battery was on the opposite side to the current. So yet another trip to Molde to buy extension cables, and right now we are trying to mount the battery with good help from the owner of the camping. I’ve been the one driving back and forth so I’m not really updated on the plans, but my guess is that we will stay here for another night and try to drive Atlantic Ocean Road in sunset. Maybe even let out the drone for a spin. But the spirit is good, fixing bikes is part of the adventure (according to some of us). I assume we tonight will decide on goal for tomorrow.
The weather here is fine, around 30 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. The big tent that we have have worked fine (but we haven’t tried it rain). Dale has already driven longer on this trip than he has done up until now in his motorcycle life, but he seems to love it. A sore bum after the first day, but the long drive yesterday worked fine.
No pictures today (yet), but hopefully some nice photographs tonight! But here is one from the guys!
Day 3 Norway
Quick stop for lunch in Norway!
Day 2 in Särna
Well today was not a good day! First the forgotten phone and then after that Feridun got problems with his bike. It doesn’t seem to charge the battery. We spent a couple of hours in Särna trying to get it going, just by the place where the choppers start and stop for the firefighting. We managed to start the bike and went some 10 km West and found a lovely beach where we put up the tent. If we are lucky we might have solved the problem with the bike, we will know for sure tomorrow. So if everything goes well we will cross the border to Norway before lunch!
Day 2 Currently in Mora
Everyone slept well and it was a beautiful morning when we woke up. Took it quite easy and got on our way at 10.30. Some 13 kilometers again on dirt road, but this time in daylight. Quick stop in Leksand for some fuel and water, and then we continued towards Idre. At a stop close to Mora one of the guys realized that he had forgotten his phone at the petrolstation i Leksand. So currently the rest of us are waiting at McDonalds while he takes a ride back for his phone. Not sure where we will end up tonight, we are a bit behind on the schedule for the day
Day 1 In Gagnef
We didn’t leave Stockholm until 17. Temperature well above 30, and a warm journey started! Some nice scenery on the way and a lovely sunset. We made it to our destination at around 23ish. Last 13 kilometres on dirt road in the dark. Now the camp is set and we all have had dinner. Our tent is just by a lake with a nice moon! Tomorrow we head towards Idre!
