Summer 2018

Norway trip 2018 – summary

So, now the trip is over. We covered 3 000 kilometers during our 11 day trip. We started off and ended in Stockholm:

We have been extremely fortunate with the weather, only one day with rain. Most of the days we have had temperture between 25 and 32 degrees. Hottest day we were up to 35. Highest altitude was 1 200 meters. We camped all nights but two (Telemarken and Oslo). Oslo was planned, but Telemarken was necessary due to the heavy rain. We had two incidents with the bikes, one with Feridun’s bike and one with the Virago that Dale was driving. Both related to battery and charging, but both problems were fixed “on the road”. We have all loved Norway and the beautiful scenery, the fjords, the lakes, the roads and the friendly people of Norway. Only downside if of course that it’s so expensive. But camping does make the trip more affordable, and fuel prices aren’t that much higher than back  home. Dale has become a true biker now, with some milage behind him. It took only a few days before he had ridden more than he has done in his previous bikers life. I guess it’s a good sign when we at the end started discussing the next trip. Should it be Iceland or Scotland? Let’s see what happens. There will be a movie coming out, but that will take a couple of days.

Day 10 By a lake close to Ludvika

We went on a small touristic tour in Oslo in the morning. We went to the Royal Castle and The Fortress and finally a quick tour on Karl Johan. We went back to Helsfyr and picked up the bikes and headed towards Sweden. Some of the roads were nice but we have been spoiled with magnificent roads and views, so we weren’t that impressed! We went to Hagfors, were we bought food and beer and then started looking for a nice camping spot. After a while we found a good place, a small lake with a sand beach. I managed to fall with the bike in the soft sand on the way down. Jordan then drive and had the same experience. The bike is heavy and that makes it hard in soft sand.

Day 9 Oslo

Did we enjoy a night in a proper bed, with a proper pillow? Oh yes we did. We had a lovely breakfast (not the standard, bread, peanut butter and jam). Most of our stuff had dried during the night, but we put out the tent in the morning to make it dry in the sun. We got off at 11, and today it was a nice day, temperature around 20 degrees and sunny. Our aim was Oslo, and the GPS took us on some really nice roads. No photo stops today, I  guess we have taken all the lake/creek/fjord pictures we need. We arrived safely to the hotel (located on Karl Johan street), put our luggage in the room and took the bikes out to the CGI office and put them in the garage. A quick subway ride back to the hotel and then off to The Dubliners pub for a dinner, a couple of pints and a game of dart. The we walked out to Akers brygge and ended up at a place called Bryggan. We actually got everyone to leave their smart phones in a pile on the table. Picking them up would mean that you had to pay for the next round. Really nice actually to get the phones out of the way. Btw, nobody picked their phone up:-). Tomorrow we will have an early breakfast, a quick tour around in town before we aim to drive towards Dalarna, and our last night camping. Sorry, no pictures today

Day 8 Vågslivatnet

Well, an unusual day! The guys returned from the hike and went to sleep at 6 am. The rest of us got up at between 8 and 10. We took a walk downtown and found a nice bar/restaurant where we sat down and tried to kill the day. Later in the afternoon we got a call from Base camp that the tent was flooded! We went back, packed all our wet gear and hit the road. Forecast said heavy rain and it was correct! After some 80 kilometres we found a nice hotel up in the Highlands. We checked in, got some help with drying and even washing some clothes. We had a nice dinner and now we relax in the bar. Tomorrow we head for Oslo!

Day 7 Trolltunga

For once we got started pretty early, 9.30ish. It soon got really warm again, and it was really nice with a tunnel now and then. Today we drove in the longest tunnel so far, 25 km. We had yet to take another ferry today and we had some really nice driving during the day. When we reached Hardangervidda it started to get colder and there was some rain (or maybe us driving into the clouds). At 1.200 meters we took a short coffee break and warmed ourselves. But the scenery was fantastic, and for once, not too many cars. On our decent, we experienced some really amazing tunnels, that almost went 360 degrees. We then past by some skiresorts, among them Geilo. We came to Trolltunga at 22ish and took the narrow road all the way up to the starting point. However, camping was not allowed anywhere up there, so we had to drive to Odda camping. Weather forecast says thunderstorms and heavy rain tomorrow and Trolltunga will be closed, so the english part of the group decided to go up to Trolltunga in the middle of the night. It’s a six hours walk up and 5 hours down. So we expect them back around noon tomorrow. If the weather forecast is right, we will probably stay here tomorrow. Unfortunately our tent is big and comfortable, but we are not sure it will cope with rain and storm. But we will find out!

Quick update, they didn’t make it! They had a hard time finding the right track, and got lost for a period of time. When it started raining, they decided to head back to Base Camp. Now they are asleep in the tent, safe and sound!
